On October 27 2024, the jubilee year begins – we celebrate 750 years of Amsterdam. There are more than 200 activities planned to celebrate this anniversary. Such as the opening concert in the Ziggo Dome, major events like Sail, the party on the Ring, and countless other activities. And because all districts deserve to be highlighted during Amsterdam 750, amsterdam&partners is organizing an edition of 24 hours in all districts and Weesp. The kick-off will be on May 25 in Amsterdam-West. Later this year, on September 7, Amsterdam East will be in the spotlight. On October 12, 24 hours in Nieuw-West takes place. The rest of the districts will be celebrated in 2025.
Various projects have received grants as part of Amsterdam 750, some of which are participating in 24 hours West. Such as a kickboxing workshop at Vondelgym where early birds can start the day at 6:00 a.m., followed by a free breakfast. Then there’s the walking concert “Waanzinnig West,” where you stroll through the neighborhood, hear music, and meet local artists. Another highlight is “Ships, Suitcases, and Spices” at De Hallen Studios, exploring the connection between Amsterdam and its residents with African roots. For vintage enthusiasts, there’s Meneer Howard & Co, a neighborhood room run by 13 volunteers with disabilities, hosting a mini flea market with a performance by singer Suzanne Kuiper. We close 24 hours West with a monster hunt full of mocktails and creative workshops.
Also, young Amsterdammers are taken care of! The annual West League soccer tournament for and by teenagers marks a special milestone this year as the Amsterdam West League celebrates its 10th anniversary. For those who prefer to explore their creative side, the adventure playground ‘t Landje is the place to be. In honor of spring, ‘t Landje is organizing a festive day full of games, activities, and music. For little ones who love to get lost in the magic of stories, the Vondelkerk offers an enchanting morning with the Reading Express. Together with residents, local entrepreneurs and cultural and social institutions in the neighborhood, a diverse 24-hour program is being put together. This event shines a spotlight on a district. At various locations, tours, workshops, exhibitions and other activities are organized for both young and old. The goal of ’24 hours Amsterdam’ is to introduce residents of the district and the rest of Amsterdam to the recreational and cultural offerings of a neighborhood. But also to discover new locations and meet neighborhood residents and local entrepreneurs. The better Amsterdammers get to know the diverse neighborhoods of the city, the greater the pride and connection among Amsterdammers becomes.
