A look back at the first month of Amsterdam 750!

12 December 2024

Since October 27, 2024, Amsterdam has been celebrating its 750th jubilee. The first month of this special jubilee year was filled with unforgettable and unifying moments. Let’s look back at some of the highlights from this first month of celebration.

A spectacular kickoff

On October 27, the jubilee year began with a dazzling Opening Concert for Amsterdam 750 at the Ziggo Dome. The legendary Metropole Orchestra and a star-studded lineup of artists – from André Hazes to Jeangu Macrooy – captivated the audience. With stunning visuals by Gaiia Studio and a touch of humor from Van der Laan and Woe, it was an unforgettable evening. Watch the aftermovie below.

Partying into the early hours

From October 26 to 27, the pre-party by denacht.amsterdam took place, a collaboration between nightclubs Garage Noord, kanaal40, and Radio Radio. Especially for Amsterdam 750, these clubs are hosting talks and workshops throughout the year on relevant themes for Amsterdam’s nightlife culture. With 10 club nights, 4 weekenders, 25 talks, and 25 workshops, Amsterdam’s nightlife culture will be in the spotlight all year long. Watch AT5’s recap below.

A festival of culture and connection

In celebration of Amsterdam 750, The Spirit of Amsterdam transformed the city into a three-day festival from November 22 to 24, featuring music, art, and togetherness across 37 houses of worship. Through intimate concerts, dinners, and modern rituals, the festival united the city, with special attention to vulnerable Amsterdammers. Watch the aftermovie below.

But that’s not all…

There were also community-driven initiatives, such as the Windows Festivalin Amsterdam East. On October 27, countless windows in Oud-Oost were decorated as birthday cards, turning the streets into an open-air art gallery for visitors to enjoy throughout the day. On October 31, the traveling exhibition Marokkaan in Mokum opened—a showcase of the history of Moroccan Amsterdammers, running at various locations in the city until September 2025. And of course, the finale of the de Grote Amsterdam Quiz took place, broadcast live on AT5.

A decorated city and birthday surprises

In addition to a packed schedule of activities, the city was festively dressed and surprised with unique birthday gifts this past month! The Stedelijk Museum unveiled the Don Quixote Sculpture Garden in its entrance area—a free space where art and community meet. Waternet introduced a special Amsterdam 750 manhole cover, now scattered throughout the city, and a new golden children’s book, De schat van Amsterdam (The Treasure of Amsterdam), was released. This book takes kids on an adventurous journey through the city’s rich history.

We also launched 750x Amsterdam, a platform that brings together 750 Amsterdam stories under one digital roof in celebration of the jubilee year. Amsterdam 750 came to life in schools across the city, and René Froger and Billy Dans released a special song for the jubilee, titled De Stad (The City).

The start of Amsterdam 750 showcases what the city does best: celebrating, creating, and connecting together. And this is just the beginning! Stay updated on all activities through this website.
