In October 2025, a unique new experience will open at Cultuurdorp Westergas: Amsterdam in Motion. This impressive show is a gift to the city, celebrating 750 years of Amsterdam.
At the heart of Amsterdam in Motion is a vast 200-square-metre model of the city – the largest multimedia city model in the world. A 15-minute show brings to life the past, present and future of Amsterdam. From a small fishing village in 1275 to the international city we know today – and a glimpse into what lies ahead.
With lights, sound and projections, the model transforms into a vivid, immersive experience. After the show, visitors are free to explore the model up close.
Following the model show, visitors can dive deeper into the city’s major themes in an interactive exhibition. Topics include housing, fashion, technology, migration and protest. You’ll discover how Amsterdam is constantly changing – and what role you can play as a resident or visitor. A special educational programme will be developed for schools and students.
Amsterdam in Motion is the brainchild of Duncan Stutterheim, working in collaboration with the Amsterdam Museum, Cultuurdorp Westergas, Monks and many other partners. The Amsterdam Museum is developing the script and exhibition together with others, and will also manage the project.
The show will take place in the Zuiveringshal Oost, previously home to the NEP studio used by the Dutch TV programme De Wereld Draait Door. The venue is next to Fabrique des Lumières and Theatre De Krakeling.
Amsterdam in Motion is for all Amsterdammers – and for everyone visiting the city. Young or old. With stories from the past and dreams for the future, it will be a place where the love for Amsterdam only grows stronger.
