On June 30, 2023, the Ministry of Finance announced that a special coin will be issued for the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam. The coin will be minted and released in the second half of 2024. The collector’s coin will have a value of 5 or 10 euros and will be legal tender.
“We are pleased and honored that the Secretary of State has chosen to commemorate the Amsterdam 750 jubilee year with a collector’s coin. With this announcement, one of the many initiatives in preparation becomes visible, both locally and regionally, and, as in this case, at the national level,” says program director Sietse Bakker.
In the coming period, the ministry will select a number of artists to create a design for the coin. Advised by a special Coin Advisory Committee, the Secretary of State will announce the winning design.
A jubilee coin fits into tradition. Also, in honor of the celebration of Amsterdam 700 years, a special coin was minted. The Mokum 700 years Florin featured the coat of arms of Amsterdam and depicted the 3 St. Andrew’s crosses. The silver coin had a value of two quarters.
