In celebration of the 750th jubilee of the city, the Canon of Amsterdam is being renewed. The Canon is a collection of fifty stories that depict the city's history
These stories offer insight into how the city has developed over the centuries. However, the way we view these stories is changing. Therefore, it’s time for an updated version. The Canon was first established in 2008 under the leadership of Professor of Dutch History Piet de Rooy. Now, the City Archives has assembled a team of experts to revise the Canon. They not only draw on their own knowledge but also seek advice from social organizations and educators to give the Canon a fresh perspective.
The updated Canon will be accessible digitally and will be housed at the City Archives. Additionally, it will be adapted for use in education, allowing students to learn about the history of Amsterdam and easily access this information.
The revision begins in January 2025 and is expected to be completed by October 2025. With this update, the Canon of Amsterdam will remain not only a source of knowledge but also an invitation to reflect together on the past, present, and future of our city.
Exciting news: the fiftieth story remains open! Amsterdammers and students are invited to contribute ideas about which story should be included. A unique opportunity to have your voice heard and help write the history of our city. You can read more about it here.
