Amsterdam Light Festival celebrates 750 years of Amsterdam

02 December 2024

The dark days are once again enchantingly illuminated, as the Amsterdam Light Festival has begun! This year, the festival holds extra festive significance as it coincides with Amsterdam 750. And what better way to shine a spotlight on this milestone than with light art?

A Ritual of Light

The theme of the 13th edition is aptly chosen: Rituals. Rituals bring us together and mark moments of transition, much like Amsterdam has done for centuries—a city rich in stories and connections. From glistening waterways to magical art installations along the route, the festival unites us in a way that perfectly complements Amsterdam 750.

Iconic Light Art and Lasting Memories

To celebrate Amsterdam’s 750th jubilee, three iconic light installations have been specially created to honor this milestone. Additionally, this year the festival shines a spotlight on 35 remarkable Amsterdammers—people who make their neighborhoods a little brighter, such as a caring neighbor or a tireless volunteer. Nominations for these exceptional individuals were open until October 1, 2024, and the honorees were announced at the start of the jubilee year on October 27, 2024. In January, they will enjoy an exclusive boat tour along the illuminated artworks of the Amsterdam Light Festival.

Practical Information

The Amsterdam Light Festival runs from November 28, 2024, to January 19, 2025. Each evening, the lights turn on at 5:00 PM, creating a breathtaking scene until late at night. Whether you travel by bike, on foot, or using public transport, the route is easily accessible.

Don’t miss this unique combination of art, history, and celebration. Together, we’ll honor 750 years of Amsterdam—with light, with art, and with each other.
