As a gift for Amsterdam's 750th birthday, ING and the Amsterdam real estate company Kroonenberg Groep are gifting the city with over 5500 solar panels. With this initiative, the two companies, both of which have been connected to the capital for decades, aim to contribute to the city's sustainability.
The solar panels, with a total value of 4 million euros, generate 2250 MWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 900 households. The goal is to install these solar panels on the roofs of around 30 buildings with a social function, such as sports clubs, cultural and social institutions, care facilities and community centers. The solar panels will be distributed across all districts of Amsterdam, including Weesp. With a nod to the Amsterdam accent, the project has been named “Amsterdamse Maatschappelijke Sonnepanelen” (Amsterdam Social Solar Panels). The first panels are expected to be installed on Amsterdam’s rooftops by the end of this year, with the entire project aimed for completion by the end of 2027.

The initiative is set up so that the savings realized by the social organizations can be passed on to Amsterdammers, particularly those who could use a helping hand during these times. This could take the form of discounts on tickets to cultural institutions or free memberships at various Amsterdam sports clubs. Collaboration will take place with the municipality of Amsterdam and the social institutions renting the respective buildings from Municipal Real Estate where the panels will be installed.
Mayor Halsema received the gift today from the CEOs of ING and Kroonenberg Groep. This took place at Provada, the annual real estate fair at the RAI. Mayor Halsema: ''This gift to the city is a wonderful example of social commitment from the Amsterdam business community. It benefits Amsterdammers and social organizations that need lower energy bills the most. It fits within the initiatives of the New Amsterdam Alliance, where companies, residents, and the government contribute to the city's livability. Not a one-time gesture, but a real investment in the future. For that, I want to thank ING and Kroonenberg Groep.''
