Children from Sluis visit the municipality of Amsterdam

04 April 2025

On Thursday, April 3, students in groups seven and eight from primary school 'De Nieuwe van Dale' from Sluis in Zeeland left for Amsterdam. Through councilor Marjolein Moorman, they invite Amsterdam students from primary schools to participate in an exchange program. This exchange program is based on a reading letter story that is read weekly in participating classes. A special story, written by writer Jan Schuurman Hess, about the city of Amsterdam that is celebrating its birthday.

City and countryside

The aim of this sympathetic project is to reduce the distance between city and countryside and to connect schools throughout the country through a story. This is done by schools also visiting each other.

Eight schools from Limburg, North Brabant, Drenthe, Gelderland, Friesland and North Holland are already participating. They received 750 beautiful decoration packages from Amsterdam for the classroom. The children presented the story to councilor Marjolein Moorman, with the request to also call on Amsterdam schools to participate.

The story; ‘The long road to the sun’

The story is about Timmy, a 10-year-old boy who lives in Amsterdam East and comes from Mali, and a mysterious street musician from Kreekhoek. Together they embark on a dangerous quest: finding the boy’s mother. What if their adventure takes them not only through the city of Amsterdam, but through the entire country? From city to province, a journey full of unexpected twists. Will they find the mother? Or will it be a journey that changes their lives forever?
