Last Saturday, February 8, a hundred Amsterdam residents brought the hundred city vases by artist Navid Nuur to the former city vault (the Iron Chapel) in the Oude Kerk during a festive program. Navid Nuurs' project NN XXX ties in with the celebration of Amsterdam's 750th anniversary.
From 2025, one vase will be auctioned every year on October 27, Amsterdam’s birthday. In 2125, exactly one hundred years later, the last vase will leave the chapel and the When Doubt Turns into Destiny project will be completed. Navid Nuur wants the Oude Kerk to use the proceeds to allow artists to create new work in all their future manifestations over the next hundred years. The Iron Chapel, once the city vault of Amsterdam, will once again become a treasure. Nuur made the vases by rolling them against facades, doors, bridges and street furniture. In this way he provided the vases with literal impressions of the city. The glaze is composed of materials such as shells from the IJ, glass from cafés and silt from the canals. In this way, the vases carry the soul of Amsterdam. With this unique project, Nuur connects past, present and future, and art becomes a tangible legacy for the city.
