The city is receiving 5 permanent light artworks as a gift

03 December 2024

To highlight Amsterdam's 750th jubilee, the city is gifting five unique light artworks. These installations, spread across various districts, not only create a festive atmosphere but also enhance the vibrancy and safety of their surroundings. They are places where art, local communities, and history come together.

Art for and by Amsterdammers

What makes these artworks even more special is the close collaboration with local residents. This results in designs that not only enrich the locations but also truly resonate with the people who live and work there. For example, in Noord, where young women contribute to the artwork by Titia Ex, and in Nieuw-West, where Yasser Ballemans works directly with locals to shape the artwork.

The light installations will be placed at five carefully selected locations:

  • Wildemanbuurt (Nieuw-West): Yasser Ballemans collaborates with local residents in a mobile forge to create a playful and interactive artwork.
  • Hatostraat (under the A10 near Sloterdijk): German artist Christoph Hildebrand gives this passage a futuristic and dynamic character.
  • F.A. Warnerspad (between Duivendrecht and the ArenA area): Italian artist Angelo Bonello creates an artwork that perfectly aligns with the hustle and bustle of this area.
  • Meester Bouhuijstunnel (Weesp): The Amsterdam collective Taartrovers involves 60 schoolchildren from Weesp in designing a playful, fairy-tale-like creation.
  • Nieuwe Purmerweg (Noord): Artist Titia Ex engages in conversations with women and girls about their place in public space, resulting in an artwork that radiates strength and connection.

A careful selection

The artists have been carefully selected by curator Isabel Nielen from the Amsterdam Light Festival and a special project team. Together, they bring a mix of international allure and local involvement to the city.

A beacon of light for everyone

The light artworks will be realized throughout 2025. They are a gift to all Amsterdammers, inviting everyone to pause and reflect on what has made the city so special for 750 years: its diversity, creativity, and sense of community.

So, keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready, because Amsterdam will soon be even more beautifully lit!
