The roof of the Nieuwe Kerk will be open to the public once from March 22 to November 2, 2025. The crossing tower, the spire in the middle of the roof of De Nieuwe Kerk, will be restored in 2025. A large platform is being built on the roof of the Amsterdam monument especially for this restoration. A unique opportunity that will have a very special public version for the celebration of Amsterdam 750.
A view like almost no one has ever experienced. From the roof of the 15th-century church, nearly 40 meters high. The last major maintenance of the crossing tower took place in the 1960s. At that time, the church had been closed to the public for nearly twenty years due to a major restoration. In 2025, De Nieuwe Kerk gives the public the opportunity to watch the work being carried out on the roof.
On the way to the top in 216 steps
The route to the roof promises a unique experience in 216 steps. It begins with access to the 17th-century staircase originally built for a 115-meter-high church tower on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, which was never completed. This staircase is normally not accessible to the public. The route continues via a (temporary) scaffold staircase to the platform on the roof. Once at the top, the tower, currently under restoration, can be viewed, and the skyline of the city unfolds. This includes the Westerkerk, Koepelkerk, Central Station, the Bijenkorf, Kalverstraat, and of course the roof of the Royal Palace Amsterdam, Oude Kerk, Zuiderkerkstoren, as well as modern urban icons such as the Zuidas, A’DAM Tower, Pontsteiger, and the Rembrandttower. Visitors exit the platform on the Dam side, where a second temporary scaffold will be built.
