The Spirit of Amsterdam – A celebration of culture in meaningful places

09 July 2024

In Amsterdam, where the city celebrates its rich history and diverse culture, The Spirit of Amsterdam will take place from November 22 to 24, 2024. This three-day city festival invites you to discover the hidden gems of Amsterdam: more than 40 places of worship will open their doors for an unparalleled experience of art, music, culture, and rituals.

The goal of The Spirit of Amsterdam is simple yet powerful: to create a city where people have more time and attention for each other. By bringing together different worldviews, the festival aims to provide a platform for positive change and connection. Each program has a social objective. It is an invitation to do something good for someone else, to take a moment of silence, and to turn off our phones to be truly present. Connect and meet.

Unique programming

At more than forty unique locations, such as the Vondelkerk, Ruigoord, Fatih Mosque, He Hua Temple, Jeruzalem Church, and even Central Station, more than fifty events will take place. The diverse program includes spiritual hip-hop of the future, sacred songs from countries like Ukraine, Syria, Iran, and India, and theatrical spoken word. For the full program, visit thespirit.amsterdam.

An open invitation

The festival is aimed at everyone who is open to positive change and connecting with the unknown. Whether you are a spiritual seeker or just curious, you are welcome in the numerous churches, temples, mosques, synagogues, and other places of worship. At least 10% of the tickets will be reserved for the most vulnerable in the city, such as the homeless and those with low incomes, ensuring that no one misses out on this special event.

No religious objectives

Although the festival takes place in places of worship, The Spirit of Amsterdam has no religious objectives. It is an opportunity to be inspired by the beauty of rituals and traditions without any obligations. Think of the warmth of lighting a candle for someone dear to you or the peace of a minute of silence for reflection.

Accessibility for everyone

The Spirit of Amsterdam is committed to making all locations accessible for people with physical challenges. However, as the festival involves historical buildings, there may be limitations. The website will soon provide information on the accessibility of each event using accessibility icons.

Additionally, attention will be given to the language of the programming. Most programs are in Dutch, with some in English. Many events can be followed without specific language knowledge. In the coming weeks, an English version of the website will be developed.

Pre-registration

Tickets will be available for purchase starting August 19. Want to ensure your participation? Leave your email address on The Spirit of Amsterdam’s website to be the first to know when tickets are available.
