Wanted: a dull grey roof in Amsterdam to turn green!

16 October 2024

Are you or do you know the owner of a grey, dull, concrete roof in Amsterdam that can be transformed into a green oasis? Then we are looking for you! In honor of Amsterdam's 750th Jubilee, MBO students are joining forces to make our city greener through their 'green roof project'.

From a grey concrete roof to a green oasis

Imagine a dull, grey roof transformed into a lush, vibrant oasis. This is what MBO students aim to make possible. All you need to do is offer your roof! The students will design, plant, and bring life to your space. Not only will this provide them with a valuable learning experience, but it also gives them the opportunity to directly contribute to the future of their city.

The guidelines

  • The roof must be at least 200m² in size and have sufficient load-bearing capacity;
  • Preferably, the roof should be (freely) accessible to the public, either partially or entirely;
  • It is important that the manager/owner is willing to collaborate in making this a green project;
  • The project should be permanent or last for at least 5 years.

Why participate?

A green roof offers many benefits. It promotes biodiversity, helps with water management, lowers the city’s temperature, and creates new spaces for both people and nature to enjoy. Additionally, it provides the next generation of urban innovators with the chance to use their skills and creativity to contribute to a more sustainable Amsterdam.

So, do you know of a roof that could be perfect for this wonderful initiative? Or are you part of an organization that can assist? If so, get in touch with MBO-Hub Amsterdam at: info@mbo-hub.amsterdam.

This initiative is part of the Future Fest: ten days in the jubilee year dedicated entirely to exploring and shaping the future of our city. Because during the jubilee year, we not only look back, but also ahead.
