The exhibition Amsterdam Eats. A history in dishes at the Allard Pierson is coming to an end. Until Sunday, 7 September 2025, you can discover how food and the city have been closely connected throughout the centuries.
At the heart of the exhibition are nine dishes that reflect Amsterdam’s culinary culture over time: from herring and steak to pickles and nasi goreng. Cookbooks, paintings, and objects from the extensive Food History collection show how tastes and traditions evolved alongside the city.
On Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September, the festive closing weekend takes place. Visitors can join guided tours, attend talks, and taste authentic Amsterdam pickles. On Sunday, culinary historian Charlotte Kleyn, restaurant critic Hiske Versprille, and Michelin chef Jos Timmer, among others, will share their knowledge and passion.
Also on view is Amsterdammers at the Table, an art project by Malou Sumah. She gathered stories from residents of all city districts and brought them together in a large tablecloth that symbolizes Amsterdam’s cultural diversity.
